Sign requests city to install crossing light

A father who lost his daughter in a tragic accident a year ago continues to wait both for a coroner's report and a traffic light.

On August 19, 2006, five-year-old Emma Heppner died after being struck by a southbound vehicle at the intersection of Highway 101 and Joyce Avenue. Darryl Heppner, Emma's father, circulated a petition in the wake of the tragedy supporting a traffic light at the intersection. More than 4,000 people signed the petition, which was presented to City of Powell River Mayor Stewart Alsgard and council.

Strike awaits solution

United Steelworkers forest workers' (USW) strike continued into its fifth week and both sides are still no closer to an agreement.

Bob Henderson, USW strike coordinator for Powell River, said the future looked slightly brighter two weeks ago when me-too companies seemed ready to negotiate. While me-too contractors are not members of Forest Industrial Relations (FIR), they operate with the same contract agreement reached between FIR and the union.

Bus passenger numbers climb

Powell River transit ridership increased by 11 per cent over the previous year and carried a record number of passengers.

Powell River Transit, a partnership between the City of Powell River and BC Transit, carried 155,796 passengers in 2006/07, an increase of almost 15,000. The service runs four buses on three routes.
