Motorists face fines for allowing animals to ride loose

Driving around with an unrestrained animal can bring a fine. The BC SPCA, RCMP and Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) recently launched a joint awareness campaign to make vehicles safer for pets and motorists. The organizations are trying to educate motorists about the dangers of improperly secured pets.

Powell River Recreation Complex will become more energy efficient

Powell River Recreation Complex will be receiving some green upgrades.

City of Powell River officials applied for a municipal rural infrastructure fund grant from the federal government in February, and the application was recently approved, giving the city $798,943 to make the recreation complex more energy efficient.

Waterfront meeting becomes contentious

Waterfront development was the contentious topic of a spirited town hall meeting in Powell River, hosted by Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country MP Blair Wilson.

The forum was one of 10 public consultations Blair has organized throughout his riding. Approximately 50 people attended the meeting, held at the Powell River Town Centre Hotel, Thursday, August 9.

Memorial service tribute to Lupul

Hundreds came out on Monday, August 13 to remember and celebrate the life of former Powell River resident and Vancouver Canuck Gary Lupul.

The emotional memorial service at the Powell River Recreation Complex Evergreen Theatre was filled with many tears, but also, appropriately, a lot of laughs. Three men gave testimonials to Lupul's strong character: his nephew, Kevin Clark; former neighbour and friend Darren Strueby; and former teammate Harold Snepsts. All spoke of Lupul's ability to connect with everyone he met and to treat people with respect and decency.

Man walks away from car wreck

Lloyd Greene undid his seatbelt and crawled out of his flattened, upside-down '77 Corvette, unharmed.

Greene had been travelling northbound on Joyce Avenue at 8:15 am Wednesday, August 8. "I was coming around the corner, just past the hospital, when I lost control of the car," said Greene. "As soon as I spun out I realized I was heading for a fire hydrant. Then I was airborne." Greene is a former pilot. "Because I used to fly, I guess that's why I wasn't scared when I realized I was sailing through the air."

Avoiding bears requires care

Killing a bear is something conservation officer Mike Girard really hates to have to do.

Girard recently had to trap and destroy a black bear that had developed a healthy appetite for livestock, even though they usually prefer a summertime diet of vegetation.

Hiker falls down mountain

A day in the wilderness in the Powell River region took a bad turn for three hikers.

The hikers were on a remote mountain trail near the northeastern tip of Princess Louisa Inlet when one of them, a 22-year-old man from the United States, fell 25 metres down the side of a mountain, on Friday, August 10.

Townsite makes wastewater list

Powell River city councillor Sandi Tremblay said the Townsite might still be considered as the location for a new liquid wastewater plant.

"That was not intended to be included on the list but it was put on by mistake. Now, maybe the council wants to keep it on that list. I have to have a meeting with them to find out," Tremblay said.
