Fund anchors harbour plan
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE: Westview wharfinger Jim Parsons looks at the congestion in the south harbour. Planned changes would increase the dock space to accommodate larger boats.
A major funding announcement has propelled Powell River one giant step closer to improving its waterfront and reeling in thousands of boaters who simply pass the community because there's no place to tie up.
Island Coastal Economic Trust (ICET) has approved more than $2 million to expand Powell River's south boat harbour.
"We're going to enjoy capturing a lot of the transient boats who look at us now and say it's just too congested to stop in here, so they go elsewhere," said Mayor Stewart Alsgard.

Travellers using Internet research
Tracking them accurately is going to be more of a challenge in years to come. As more people research and plan their holidays using their computers, the traditional source of information, Tourism Powell River, may never see or hear from them in-person. However, they are making their presence felt on the Internet. Andrew Pinch is the marketing director for Tourism Powell River. "We got three million hits on the Discover Powell River website last year," he said. "That's pretty good for a small community." A survey in the US of 2,100 web users found that 70 per cent of them used the Internet to plan their holidays.

It has been almost three weeks since BC forestry workers took strike action against 31 member companies of Forest Industrial Relations (FIR) on July 20. As the strike by United Steelworkers (USW) members drags on, "I believe that the pulp and paper industry will be affected," said FIR spokesman Ron Shewchuk. "From what I understand the pulp supply will be drying up, if it has not dried up already. I understood that there were maybe three weeks to a month before it would really start having an affect."
